I don't know if I can write Difference Blog anymore: Sarah Palin has turned me into a sexist.

To be fair, you're going to have to hold George Bush against men. It is a kind of horrifying set of stereotypes, though, huh? It kind of makes me wish we had Hillary in there, despite my disagreements with her, because at least she's not quite so much of a stereotype.
I guess it's just the male-neutral issue rearing its ugly head. Bush has not, to my knowledge, prefaced a ridiculously offensive statement with "as a man" or "as a father"... If I were a woman or mother, I would be absolutely furious that she felt able to speak for me.
I like a comment that the woman on PBS made after the debate. This is certainly the first time on this scale that a woman used her position as a mom as a qualification, not just a character issue. I feel that it is related to the feminist awareness raising of the value of women's work (which I'm very much in favor of).
I wonder how many people understood the unstated second half of
a) I am a mom who knows how hard things are.
b) I'm not going to do anything about it.

Oh yeah dude, I absolutely feel you. The morning she was nominated I felt a wave of shame and hatred wash over me that was quite unlike anything I had ever experienced before, and I was like 'oh, THIS is what internalized misogyny feels like!' I shudder to think how much MORE sexist the cultural discourse in this country would become if GOD FORBID they were elected.
I guess I don't see how disliking her has anything to do with sexism. I dislike Bush and that doesn't mean I hate men or think men are innately unqualified.
I only think Palin is unqualified...not all women. And I think that she's an ass for playing her gender and parental status for political gain. I feel the same way about male politicians using religion for political gain.
